The City Of Lights - Delicious Diversity

This past weekend we took a trip to Paris, France - The City of Lights. It was the first vacation I’ve taken since we got back from our 6 month journey. Carolyn, however, has been on a couple of vacations without me (Hawaii and Costa Rica). I’ve been spending my time worried, sad, mad, applying for jobs, studying for the CPA Exam, working on buying our new house, and trying to sell this current one.

Paris is similar to New York in so many ways. The streets are all walkable. There are plenty of different neighborhoods with different cultures and characters. The people and food are an eclectic mix. The history is evident in the architecture, statues, and monuments. It’s another melting pot of today’s society, despite some of the French displeasure with how open its borders have been. And I think I can understand why.

Our visit to Paris was filled with expectation, I suppose. We knew the food was going to be great. That’s what this trip was for. But I don’t think we thought we’d see such diversity in people. I think we imagined a very white, Christian / Catholic Paris. But what we experienced was the cultures of a variety of ethnicities. From the Senegalese to the Middle Eastern to the Asian and even South American, many countries were represented. Not just the people, but their food and lifestyles. For example, a section in the 4th arrondissement, Le Marais, was of Middle Easterners. There was literally a street with a whole lineup of kebab, falafel, gyro, Israeli, Lebanese, and other ethnic foods. And the Gare du Nord train station was a hub where many backgrounds, income levels, and cultures collided. Just walking around the city, we saw so many children of mixed decent too. Like I said, melting pot.

Anyway, back to the real reason we visited Paris - the food. France is known the world around for being somewhat of the epicenter of the classically trained chef. Culinary artists from every corner of the globe make it a point to learn, grow, and work in Paris. Some may say this city might be the culinary capital of the world. French cuisine is rich in flavor and delicate in nature. The refinement of their food embodies the class and style of their creators.

We had the opportunity to dine at a number of places, adding to our own experience-list of either Michelin-starred restaurants or San Pellegrino’s World’s Best Restaurants. This time around we had the pleasure of seatings at Le Cinq and Epicure. Both were wonderful in the fine dining sense - from the service to the ambiance. And both provided some of the best tastes we’ve had. Like all the other award winning dishes we’ve eaten, I could use so many different adjectives to describe our meals but none would do the flavors any justice. If only someone could invent the scratch-n-taste picture / photo or smell-o-vision, that would be awesome.

Needless to say, we had a fun, delicious, and entertaining time in Paris!

Cool, Calm, and Charming Charleston

Last month, we decided that a short break from the NY/NJ area and work (for my wife) would be much needed before getting into the holiday season and year-end festivities (Thanksgiving, brother's wedding, and Christmas). So we decided to pick a place not too far from home to be adventurous in. Most of the major cities within a 3hr drive or 45-60 min flight have all been visited, so we had to extend our driving range or flight time. A whole new set of options opened up naturally.

We staved off going North to escape the cooling temps for now. Summer will give us more opportunity in that direction. The mid-West was calling our name in the directions of St. Louis, Louisville, or Nashville. But we decided to keep those for a cross-country road trip after we have children. Then there was Atlanta, Charlotte, Savannah, or Charleston.

Atlanta is a big city that we'll visit one day. My wife has family there, so it's inevitable. Charlotte was appealing, but too far inland. We decided we wanted to be able to get to the shore to inhale the fresh ocean air and let our hair flap in a seasonally warm breeze. And so Charleston and Savannah were left on the list. Just 2 hour apart from each other, a trip could easily include both. But to get the most out of this trip, we opted to spend our time exploring Charleston.

It's a walkable city. We spent a day roaming the streets of Charleston to see what was on offer. From the North end of King Street all the way down to White Point Garden, over to Waterfront Park, the French Quarter, up East Bay Street and through the City Market and up and down Meeting Street - we walked.

And with all that walking, it's impossible not to eat. And we've been eating well so far!

Pan Fried Carolina Catfish, Herbed Dumplins’, Smoked Tomato, Shrimp Kielbasa, Rapini, Potato Broth by James Beard award-winning Chef Sean Brock - Husk Restaurant

Special of the day: Meat quiche w/ grits and fresh fruit - Lost Dog Cafe

Fluke w/ Golden Osetra Caviar - McCrady's Restaurant

We still have 2 full days left here, and we're going to make the most of it. Today we head off to the Boone Hall Plantation and Garden to learn about and experience the life on a working plantation. This afternoon, we'll be enjoying a happy hour at The Darling Oyster Bar downtown because when you're here, oysters are a dime a dozen. Now if only the pricing was as good as the saying.

Tomorrow we'll be getting up early to wander through the weekly Farmers Market that is held in Marion Square in the center of the city. And cap our day off with a show at the historic Dock Street Theatre for a limited run of an adaptation of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird.

Charleston is an alluring city with plenty of history, things to do, and restaurants to eat it. It's character just fills people with joy, laughter, and happiness. And that is probably most embodied in dance. Come visit Charleston and enjoy its charm! (581)

The Power of Time Off

It's OFFICIAL! We are departing on DECEMBER 1, 2016 to start our 6 month sabbatical from work!

The road that lead us to this point was long and curvy with plenty of u-turns and detours, but we're finally here. This is the right point in our careers to take this break. We will recharge and come back rejuvenated.

We took many steps and planned every move we made at our jobs. We've been completely calculated. But now we look forward to breaking away from the disciplined lifestyle we've been leading to enjoy the fruits of our labor.

We are excited to break bread with the locals and tourists alike. We want to sip the local libation, partake in the common fare, explore the side streets, and experience the major attractions that define a city or village or town or geographic coordinate. Doesn't that sound enticing?

Join us! Come travel with us be it for a few days or weeks. We're looking for company along the way. These new experiences are all the more valuable when you have friends to enjoy it with.

If I can't convince you, then maybe this guy can. So pay attention because his idea is captivating.

Time Flies When You're Having FUN!

Life just seems to move at the speed of Usain Bolt.

In the spirit of the 2016 Olympics, here's a recap of the past year of events in pictures and video.

May 22, 2015 - we got MARRIED!

July 2015 - We went to Hawaii to attend a wedding and turned it into another fun vacation!

September 2015 - Hung out in The Bay area with some friends, stomped on some grapes, and ate at The French Laundry.

October 2015 - Went to The World Series - Game 5 and rooted for the New York Mets. Unfortunately they fell short and lost the series at home to the Kansas City Royals.

December 2015 - Started our trip in Buenos Aires, Argentina to eat some steak, drink some wine, and check out some tango.

And then we embarked on the journey of a lifetime to the end of the Earth... Antarctica! We hung out with penguins, seals, whales, a variety of birds, and met new people on the voyage!

March 2016 - a couple more weddings locally this month for some dear friends of ours, and my yearly trip to Miami. I got to see a Miami Heat game, and I tacked on a Mets spring training game. Not a bad month.

May 2016 - Kampai! Yet another wonderful trip. This time to the land of the rising sun, JAPAN! This was a fun-filled experience for us as we got to travel with friends again. Every night was something new, was something delicious, was an experience to remember. Our minds were blown. Our hearts were filled with joy. And our stomachs were filled with sushi! But none better than from this guy...

June 2016 - Carolyn ran the Boston 10K. And we spent time with some friends who ran with her.

July 2016 - was a packed month for us. Carolyn went to Nashville to celebrate one of her closest friend's bachelorette party. The next weekend we celebrated Carolyn's birthday in Philadelphia. Then we spent time in the Finger Lakes in upstate NY with Kirby the weekend after that. And then we flew to Dallas for my brother, Dave's engagement party the last weekend of the month! There was something going on every single weekend. It was tiring, but it was worth it.

And now we're here... and on we go...

Can I keep up this time?
